While California is celebrated for its cheese, demand is high for fluid milk exports. Dairies are updating their technology to give milk a longer shelf life and with it, producers can more easily get in on the export market. Matthew Malcolm from California Ag Network spoke with Glenn Millar from the California Milk Advisory Board to talk about these developments and how dairy producers can expand their presence in the international market. While taking no official stance on the subject, Paul Sousa of Western United Dairies met with Matthew Malcolm on California Ag Network to explain what producers need to know about the current referendum underway that would lead to the immediate termination of the program, as well as two other recent developments that could end the program as well. Bird Flu Causes Massive Impact on California & National Milk Production
To date, H5N1 avian influenza virus type A (bird flu) has been confirmed in dairy cattle across 17 states, and has infiltrated the epicenter of the nation’s milk production — the Central Valley of California. As of April 7, it has been detected on 758 California herds. While new cases and the spread of the virus has slowed with the onset of springtime (and conditions have improved since the time of the interview), the virus’ impact on lower milk production in the Central Valley was felt by the nation. California Dairy Editor Matthew Malcolm met with Senior Dairy Analyst at Rabobank Lucas Fuess at the World Ag Expo to discuss the impact the virus has had on cows, national production and prices. Watch this brief interview and read more about the economic impact of H5N1 in the latest issue of California Dairy Magazine.

Prepare Now to Apply for This Substantial California Dairy Funding Opportunity
Many California dairy producers have heard of and even participated in CDFA’s Alternative Manure Management Program; but there is now an additional program available to California dairy producers for a considerable amount of funding known as the Dairy Plus program. Investing in manure separators, dairy digesters or even vermifiltration wastewater treatment systems have a real positive impact on lowering a dairy’s carbon footprint; however, the cost of purchasing any one of these systems is often far out of reach for the dairy producer. Watch this brief interview with Paul Sousa from Western United Dairies as he explains the new Dairy Plus program and how dairy producers can prepare and qualify for the funding.
