  • E.M. Tharp and World Ag Expo® “We Believe in Growing” Scholarship Winners Announced

    Tulare, Calif., (February 16, 2018) – World Ag Expo® and E.M. Tharp, Inc. have teamed up again to provide the “We Believe in Growing” scholarship, which supports local high school students who will be attending four-year universities to major in an agricultural field. This year’s winners, Aalexias Woolf and Abbigail Prins, will each receive $2,500 scholarships to be renewed up to four years, totaling $10,000 per student.

    “We are thrilled to join again with World Ag Expo® to support agricultural education,” said Casey Tharp, Vice President of E.M. Tharp, Inc. “There is so much ambition and talent within our younger generation. I am optimistic about the future of agriculture, because of students like Aalexis and Abbigail.”

    Aalexias Woolf, a student at North High School in Bakersfield, CA, plans to study Agriculture Education at California State University, Fresno this upcoming fall.

    Being raised around livestock and animals, Aalexias dreamed of becoming a veterinarian until she reached high school, where she fell in love with agriculture education. Aalexias has been heavily involved with the FFA organization, and was selected this year to act as a delegate for California FFA at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN.

    “The agriculture community is a small, tight-knit community,” said Woolf.” Participating in the agriculture program at North High School has given me opportunities that I never thought were possible…I am incredibly grateful for the chance to be involved in the agriculture industry and look forward to the chance to continue my education and career in the field.”

    Abbigail Prins, a student at Mission Oak High School in Tulare, CA, plans to study Animal Science at Washington State University. Abbigail was crowned District 9’s first Alternate Dairy Princess, and has won the California Junior Holstein Association’s Dairy Bowl for the past four years.

    “The career goal that I’ve set, is to become a Dairy Geneticist,” said Prins, “Through this profession I hope to make the dairy and agriculture industries more efficient, by producing more yield with fewer resources…The biggest impact I want to make, is to make the lives of dairy farmers easier, all while still producing a perfect product.”

    To be considered for the scholarship, students from across the Central Valley submitted letters of recommendation, high school transcripts, ACT or SAT scores and must expect to graduate from high school during the 2017-2018 school year.

    The winners will be recognized at the World Ag Expo Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 starting at 7:30 a.m. in the Conference & Dining Room of the Heritage Complex.   • CDFA Among Participants At World Ag Expo

    Tulare, Calif. (February 12, 2018) – The 2018 World Ag Expo is scheduled for next week in Tulare (Feb 13-15), and several divisions at CDFA will be participating.

    On Wednesday, February 14, deputy secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt will join a panel to discuss the 2018 federal Farm Bill alongside participants from the USDA, the University of California Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the California Farm Bureau Federation.

    The next day, Feb 15, a CDFA veternarian, Dr. Rosie Busch, will lead a presentation on microbial use in livestock in the wake of a new law that went into effect on January 1.  The law requires that all antibiotics for use in livestock must be under veterinary direction. The law also requires a veterinarian’s prescription for the sale of all antibiotics, prohibits the use of antibiotics for growth promotion, and limits the circumstances in which antibiotics can be used for disease prevention.

    The California Citrus Pest and Disease Prevention Committee will staff a booth at the Ag Expo to provide information about the Asian citrus psyllid, huanglongbing and other issues important to the citrus industry. CDFA collaborates with citrus growers on the committee.

    CDFA’s Inspection Services division will staff another booth to provide information about certified farmers’ markets, the State Organic Program, and the Food Safety and Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule.

    This will be the 51st annual World Ag Expo. Last year’s Expo hosted 105,780 attendees representing 43 states and 71 countries.     The largest annual agricultural exposition of its kind, World Ag Expo boasts more than 1,500 exhibitors displaying cutting-edge agricultural technology and equipment on 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space. In 2017, 105,780 people came from 43 states and 71 countries to attend the 50th anniversary of World Ag Expo.

    The World Ag Expo Arena will once again offer daily Equipment Showcases, where exhibitors will perform live demonstrations of their latest products. Seminars will be offered in a variety of categories, including dairy, irrigation, international trade, business and farm management, marketing and media, and general agriculture. These seminars are presented by professionals in the industry and provide attendees with valuable information to improve their operations.

    The Top-10 New Products Competition, sponsored by Bank of America, is back with products offering new technology and increased efficiencies. From unmanned spray systems and remote monitoring, to new tire traction solutions and ag film recycling, the Top-10 New Products has something to offer every type of farming operation.

    The 2018 World Ag Expo will host daily events, including the Wednesday evening Bud Light After-Hours Party in the Arena, with a free concert by Craig Campbell.

    Attendees can look forward to a few new events this year, including a livestock seminar and demonstration on Wednesday afternoon in the Arena, a woodworking demonstration, the Italian Trade Agency pavilion, and a wide variety of new seminars that cover everything from Organic farming to new technology in the ag industry. Attendees will also be able to enjoy the 20 new acres of parking to the south side of the International Agri-Center grounds. This new addition will allow for easier parking and greater attendance.

    Genomic Testing was a big topic of discussion at the World Ag Expo dairy seminars this year. Genomic Testing is a new technology that is becoming more available and affordable to dairy producers; however, there are still many questions as to how it all fits in to individual dairy operations.   • The 50th Anniversary of World Ag Expo Comes to a Close

    Tulare, Calif., (February 21 2017) – The 2017 World Ag Expo came to a close on February 16, 2017, with large crowds, cutting-edge exhibits and a little bit of rain. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the world’s largest annual agricultural exposition was held at the International Agri-Center and featured 1,480 exhibitors on 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space. The three day show hosted 105,780 attendees representing 43 states and 71 countries.

    “World Ag Expo has been a platform for the best and brightest in the ag industry for 50 years now. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of exhibitors and attendees to commemorate our anniversary,” said Jerry Sinift, CEO of the International Agri-Center. “World Ag Expo is a celebration of all things ag, and we are honored to play a small role in supporting the industry that never stops working to feed and clothe the world.”

    Attendees came from all over the world to learn about the newest ag equipment, services and technology. Educational seminars were held all three days and covered a variety of topics for virtually every type of agriculture operation.

    “After nearly five decades of dedicated focus on the newest equipment and solutions for advancing the agriculture industry, World Ag Expo continues to set the standard for agriculture expos,” said Jeff Sorbrero, Sales Manager for RDO Equipment Co.

    Other popular attractions at 2017 World Ag Expo included the Ride & Drive areas, Taste of California, and the daily Equipment Showcase. In celebration of the 50th anniversary, more than 6,000 people attended the Bud Light After-Hours Party, featuring Parmalee and a fireworks show. A little rain was no hindrance to the 50 Year Tractor Parade on Thursday morning, as attendees gathered to see the farm equipment on display.

  • California State Board Of Food And Agriculture Holds 2018 Farm Bill Listening Session At World Ag Expo

    Sacramento, Calif., (February 15, 2017) – The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will be hosting a 2018 Farm Bill Listening Session at the World Ag Expo in Tulare on Thursday, February 16th. The session will be held from Noon to 3:00 p.m. at the International Agri-Center/Heritage Complex, 4500 S. Laspina Street (Theater) in Tulare, CA 93274.  Individuals interested in providing public comment on the farm bill are encouraged to attend.

    “The farm bill provides the foundation for our nation’s food and agricultural policy. It is legislation that benefits everyone, including California’s farmers and ranchers,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “This legislation supports our rural communities, provides nutritional assistance for those that need it most and fosters innovations within our farm economy that benefits our environment, food safety and health.”

    The current farm bill, the Agricultural Act of 2014 will expire next year necessitating action by Congress. The farm bill provides an estimated $489 billion in federal funding nationwide to support a variety of food and agricultural programs including crop insurance, conservation, nutrition and trade.

    “California needs a farm bill that recognizes our diversity as a region and as a farm state,” said President Craig McNamara, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “We need to invest in beginning farmers, end food waste and provide greater recognition for the on-farm conservation practices that California is well known for.”

    The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and the CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The state board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials, agricultural representatives and citizens to discuss current issues of concern to California agriculture.

Tharp, Inc. “There is so much ambition and talent within our younger generation. I am optimistic about the future of agriculture, because of students like Derrick and Grace.”

    Grace Guthrie, a student at Harmony Magnet Academy, plans to study Agricultural Business at California State University, Chico this fall. Grace comes from a long line of farmers and ranchers, and hopes to continue on with the family business. She has been a member of numerous agriculture associations, including the Tulare County Farm Bureau’s Youth Leadership Program.

    “I am excited about my future in agriculture,” said Guthrie. “I have worked diligently in my studies and will continue to do so, in preparation to contribute to solutions for my family, my community and my industry.”

    Derrick Nunes, a student at Tulare Union High School, plans to study Dairy Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Derrick is the Chapter Vice President for Tulare FFA and is involved in various youth organizations. He hopes to one day own a dairy and specialize in genetics.

    “Anything in life is possible as long as we work hard, have motivation and want to be successful,” said Nunes. “I look forward to one day hiring and mentoring future students who have my same passion for the dairy industry.”

A record-setting 106,349 people came from 47 states and 79 countries to attend 2016 World Ag Expo.

Seminars will be offered in a variety of categories, including dairy, irrigation, international trade, business and farm management, marketing and media, and general agriculture.     The Career & Education Center was previous located in the Hilvers Building, which will now become the home of World Ag Expo’s newest addition, Taste of California. Taste of California will provide opportunities for attendees to experience a glimpse of what California Agriculture provides to the world.
