  • Syngenta Voluntarily Cancels CA Paraquat Registration

Pesticide registrant Syngenta voluntarily cancelled registration of Gramoxone SL 3.0 — a product containing paraquat-dichloride — in California.

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have both designated paraquat as a restricted material, meaning only licensed dealers can sell it and only professionally licensed applicators can use it. Paraquat is under DPR reevaluation.

Products containing paraquat that are registered by other companies are not affected by Syngenta’s voluntary cancellation. Gramoxone SL 3.0 may continue to be possessed and sold by DPR-licensed dealers for up to two years following the following effective date (April 1, 2028) of the company’s voluntary cancellation under California law. Growers using these products must do so in accordance with all applicable label directions, as well as state and federal regulations. Syngenta indicated that it will continue stewardship practices like training and safety resources while remaining stocks are distributed and sold.

The DPR is continuing to move through the process of reevaluation of paraquat products registered in California, in alignment with AB 1963. The Department has released two preliminary assessments and will continue to require data and additional information from remaining registrants. The reevaluations is expected to be completed by January 2029.

  • Celebrate Your Ag Mentor through the Syngenta #RootedinAg Contest

The pursuit of a brighter future is embedded in the foundation of the ag community. A passion for agriculture has been passed down through generations – all thanks to the leadership of friends, family members, teachers and more. Growers and the community who serve American agriculture keep the industry alive, and everyone has a unique story that illustrates why they are #RootedinAg.

Syngenta wants to shine a spotlight on these impactful people through the #RootedinAg contest. Entries are now open for contest participants to share the story of who inspired them to be #RootedinAg.

Three selected finalists will receive a mini touch-screen tablet with a case and wireless earphones. The grand prizewinner also receives a $500 gift card check and a professional photo session with their mentor. In addition, the winner can choose a local civic or charity organization to receive a $1,000 donation.

“Community is at the core of who we are in – and out – of the ag industry,” says Pam Caraway, communications lead at Syngenta. “Our communities and mentors shape us and pave the way for our future. They raise the next generation with the wisdom, grit and lessons learned over a lifetime. The #RootedinAg Contest gives us the chance to celebrate our rural heritage – to sing the songs of our heroes – in a way that resonates in our communities and offers insight to those outside of agriculture.”

    Here is how to enter:

    • Go to syngentathrive.com/contest to review eligibility and fill out the #RootedinAg entry form.
    • Write a paragraph or two (about 200 words) that tells the story of how your mentor inspired your passion in agriculture. Please submit a photograph that supports the written entry.

The deadline for entering is August 15. A panel of judges selects the finalists and those entries are then posted on the Thrive website where visitors can vote for their favorite. These votes, along with the judges’ scores, determine the grand prizewinner. Online voting ends October 14. The grand prizewinner will be announced later this year.

  • Accelerating a Generation Syngenta Ag Scholarship Now Open for Applications

Students studying agriculture have a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship and a donation to the charity of their choice through the 2022 Accelerating a Generation Syngenta Scholarship Program.

Through the scholarship program, which is run by the National FFA organization (FFA), Syngenta will give a total of six scholarships to college students from across the country who are pursuing an education in agricultural or farm studies. The objective of the scholarships is to help advance those winners’ knowledge of the industry.

“Making sure students feel supported is the first and most important step in ensuring a strong future in our agricultural community, and this program does just that,” says Linda Arnold Whaley, head of marketing communications for Syngenta Seeds. “Our scholarship is the perfect tool for empowering students.”

The application period runs until Jan. 11, 2022. Applicants must be U.S. residents and those in higher-education institutes must be enrolled as of fall 2021 in an accredited agriculture program at a land-grant university. FFA membership is not required.

Along with the scholarship money, each winner designates an agriculture-related non-profit organization to receive a $500 donation from Syngenta.

“Every year we are honored to receive applications from some of the best and brightest students across the country, and I anticipate this year will be the same,” says Syngenta marketing communications lead Pam Caraway.

  • Honor Your Mentor Through the Syngenta #RootedinAg Contest

Ag mentors come from all backgrounds. Some are more traditional, like our parents, grandparents, FFA leaders or ag teachers. Others are unconventional, like the random ag leader that showed up in your urban classroom. Regardless of who your mentor was, your story is special, and Syngenta wants to hear it, share it and celebrate you both through the #RootedinAg Contest.

Now accepting entries, contest participants are asked to share the story of who inspired them to be #RootedinAg. In exchange, they have a chance to honor that person and win prizes.

Along with being featured in Thrive magazine, three finalists will each receive a mini touch-screen tablet with a case and wireless earphones. The grand prize winner receives a $500 gift card plus a professional photo shoot with his or her ag mentor. In addition, the winner has the opportunity to pay it forward by designating a $1,000 donation from Syngenta to a local charity or civic organization in their name.

“The roots of agriculture run deep from generation to generation,” says Pam Caraway, communications lead at Syngenta. “Everyone has a unique story that deserves to be told — a story of resilience, of mentorship, of diversity, of family bonds. The #RootedinAg Contest gives us a chance to shine a light on these stories that are woven into the fabric of the industry we all love.”

The contest is open now. Here’s how to enter:

    • Write a paragraph or two (about 200 words) that describes the person who most inspired you and submit a photograph that supports the written entry.

The deadline for entering is June 30, 2021. A panel of judges then chooses the three finalists. The finalists’ entries are posted on the Thrive website and visitors vote for their favorite. These votes, along with the judges’ scores, determine the grand prize winner. Online voting ends Sept. 15, 2021. Syngenta announces the grand prizewinner in October.
