  • Irrigating Pistachios in Marginal Saline Soils

    With record acreage of pistachios being planted in the San Joaquin Valley, some of these orchards are being planted in areas where pistachios have never grown before.  They are being planted in marginal soils with saline or sodic issues; and although pistachios have greater tolerance for these kinds of soils than almonds, they are are not invincible.  Where do you draw the line and how do you irrigate properly to mitigate these issues?  Watch this brief interview with Daniele Zaccaria from UC Davis as he shares some great insights, and read more about it in Pacific Nut Producer Magazine.

In some cases, they might also notice what appears to be a boron deficiency as the young trees start leafing out, which might actually just be a symptom of too much water in the soil.
