  • Friant Scoping Meeting on River Restoration

    Tulare, Calif., (May 17, 2017) – Friant Water Authority Announces Public Scoping Meeting for the San Joaquin River Restoration Program’s Long-term Recapture and Recirculation of Restoration River Flows Environmental Impact Report

    The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the Friant Water Authority are preparing a joint Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report (EIS/EIR) for the Long-term Recapture and Recirculation of San Joaquin River Restoration Program Flows.  The San Joaquin River Restoration Program (SJRRP) is being implemented pursuant to the Stipulation of Settlement in NRDC, et al. v. Kirk Rodgers, et al. (Settlement) and the San Joaquin River Restoration Settlement Act, Title X of Public Law 111-11 (Act).  In accordance with Paragraph 16(a) of the Settlement and Section 10004(a)(4) of the Act, the Friant Water Authority and Reclamation intend to develop and implement a long-term plan for recirculation, recapture, reuse, exchange or transfer of Restoration Flows for the purpose of reducing or avoiding impacts to water deliveries to all of the participating Friant Division long-term contractors.

    A public scoping meeting will be held to solicit the public’s help in determining the scope of issues to be addressed in the report.  Reclamation completed scoping activities in accordance with NEPA in 2015, and this public scoping effort is being completed by Friant in accordance with CEQA, to support the preparation of an EIS/EIR, to be completed with Reclamation as the NEPA lead agency and Friant as the CEQA lead agency.  Comments received during this CEQA scoping effort will be considered along with the comments received previously during Reclamation’s scoping effort in accordance with NEPA.  The public scoping meeting is scheduled as follows:

  • Safe Food Alliance Hosts Pesticide Safety Training, April 21

    Pesticides play a unique role in environmental protection. California’s approach is based on a strong scientific foundation and has built the most comprehensive state pesticide regulation program in the nation to ensure that pesticides are used safely.  DFA’s Safe Food Alliance will be hosting a Pesticide Safety Training on April 21, 2017 in Yuba City (Plaza Room, 210 Julie Dr.), 7:00 am – 5:00 pm, for growers, processors, hullers and dryers. In this full day, eight-hour course, attendees will receive continuing education credits for laws and regulations and other hours.   • Cal Poly Packaging Program to Host Fresh Produce Packaging Seminar in May

    San Luis Obispo, Calif., (March 30, 2017) – Cal Poly’s Packaging Program faculty will host freshPACKmoves, an educational seminar focused on fresh produce packaging, May 22-24 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Monterey, Calif. The event will look specifically at e-commerce’s growing role in the fresh produce packaging industry as home-delivery services for consumers become increasingly popular.

    freshPACKmoves will feature several industry speakers, including keynote presentations from the leaders of Blue Apron, UPS Customer Solutions and Imperfect Produce. It will also include expert panels and interactive discussions on packaging’s role in food waste, traceability and food safety, and consumer expectations in e-commerce and retail. On the final day, attendees will tour of farms in the Salinas area to survey the complete supply chain from grower, to packer, to shipper.

    “In true Learn by Doing spirit, we want the attendees to have hands-on experiences and walk away with a competitive edge in their field,” said Cal Poly’s Packaging Program Director Jay Singh.

    The seminar, now in its fourth year, is especially suited to professionals responsible for translating perishable quality initiatives into packaging, supply chain, logistics and food safety solutions for their companies.   • Fresno County Farm & Nutrition Day is March 17

    Fresno, Calif., (March 15, 2017) – More than 4,000 third-grade students, teachers and chaperones from throughout Fresno County will participate in the 12th annual Farm & Nutrition Day at the Big Fresno Fairgrounds, located at Butler and Chance avenues, on Friday, March 17, from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

    The one-day, interactive educational experience is sponsored by Fresno County Farm Bureau and The Big Fresno Fair.  Attendees will have the opportunity to take part in more than 50 demonstrations and booths, which focus on how food is produced, the diversity of Fresno County agriculture and nutritional information.  Participants will learn about the abundant agricultural industry in Fresno County, agricultural career opportunities and how to make healthy food choices.

    More than 100 volunteers will assist at the event.  Several businesses and individuals are financially assisting with school transportation and other costs.

  • March IPM Breakfast Meetings Sutter-Yuba Counties

    Yuba City, Calif., (March 9, 2017) – We will largely focus on orchards crops (but everything is on the table for discussion!). These meetings are open to all interested growers, consultants, PCAs/CCAs, and related industry. Planned topics for this meeting include managing spring diseases in a wet year and getting your pest monitoring program started for the season.
