  • India Imposed Retaliatory Tariffs to Include Walnuts

    California Walnut Board: We recently received final clarification that the Indian government announcement regarding implementation of the 20% retaliatory tariff that went into effect Sunday, June 16, does, in fact, include walnuts. Please let us know whether or not you have shipments currently in transit as the US Embassy in India wants to be aware of the magnitude of the tariff change on goods that left the United States under the belief of a lower tariff rate.     Effective Sunday June 16, 2019, tariff rates increased to 120% for in shell and 30.9% for shelled walnuts from the U.S. only.

    We have been in direct contact with the Agricultural Affairs Office of the USDA in the US Embassy in India as well as the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on this matter. Tariff issues remain a top priority for the California Walnut Commission (CWC). The CWC remains engaged with United States Trade Representative (USTR), USDA (FAS and AMS), APHIS, Congressional Representatives and our consultants/agencies to ensure our concerns are heard by the Administration officials in advocating on the industry’s behalf regarding the many tariff issue as well as non-tariff barriers facing the industry.

  • Trade War Impact on CA Walnut Marketing & Government Aid

    With increasing production in the California walnut industry, and at the same time being faced with high tariffs in some of the key export markets, growers are much appreciative of the ongoing efforts of the California Walnut Board and Commission building demand for the crop, not only in the export market, but also right here in the States.   • Tree & Vine Expo, Nov. 7th

    November has come and growers & PCAs are anticipating the annual Tree & Vine Expo on November 7th at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, held by American Vineyard, California Fresh Fruit, and Pacific Nut Producer Magazines.  The Expo will feature educational grower seminars, and state of the grape, nut, and tree fruit industry addresses by Jennifer Williams from the California Walnut Board, Kelly Covello from the Almond Alliance of California, Amy Uber for the California Department of Food & Agriculture, and Erica Moyer from Turrentine Brokerage.  A complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided.  The expo provides a great environment for the industry to get together, celebrate the harvest, enjoy some good food, gain continuing education credits and network at an industry trade show with over 130 vendors. DPR has approved 4 hours of PCA credits for the expo, including 1 hr of Laws & Regs. Five hours of CCA credits have also been approved (1.5 hr Soil & Water Management, 1.5 hr IPM, 1.5 hr Crop Management, 1 hr Professional Development).  Registration is FREE and will begin at 7:00 a.m., and the meeting will conclude at 2 p.m.  Learn more about the Tree & Vine Expo and pre-register here.

  • Donald Norene Honored with UC Davis Award of Distinction

    Davis, Calif., (October 16 2017) – Donald Norene, a third-generation walnut farmer from Rio Oso, was recently honored with an Award of Distinction from the UC Davis College of Agricultural

    Donald Norene Honored with UC Davis Award of Distinction

    and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES). The award is presented annually to individuals whose contributions and achievements enhance the college’s ability to provide cutting-edge research, top-notch education and innovative outreach. Norene is a CA&ES alumnus who has held many leadership posts and who has been instrumental in rallying industry support for UC Davis research.

    Norene earned his bachelor of science in agricultural science and management in 1973. He joined with his father, Roy, and brother, Jerry, to farm peaches, walnuts and rice, and to raise beef cattle north of Sacramento. Twenty years later, as the cling peach industry was losing profitability, Norene made the bold and successful move to replace all the family’s peach trees with walnuts.

    He is a member of the California Walnut Board, which has invested millions of dollars in walnut breeding and improvement at UC Davis. Norene is a past chairman of the California Walnut Commission and a founding member and chairman of the Walnut Bargaining Association. Norene Ranches is an early adopter of research to improve walnut production and irrigation. Donald Norene and son Davin cooperate with the university on research into variety development, rootstocks, nematode control, integrated pest management and other areas. With that said, Norene is well deserving the recognition and praise offered by UC Davis and the walnut industry.
